We made it to Los Angeles! In spite of Amtrak’s continued insistence throughout the trip that we would arrive on time, or maybe even a little early, we were about two hours late rolling in to L.A.’s Union Station.
After two nights in the sleeper car bunk that was as wide as a coffin, the bed at the Hilton looked to be at least a half-acre in size. A steaming hot shower that must have lasted an hour was first on the agenda, then a nap. When I finally laid my head down on those huge, fluffy pillows, I could feel the soft rocking and rolling of the train, still with me. I smiled, remembered that incredible sunset last night, and dozed.
I’ve neglected to mention the real purpose of our trip! There is so much about this weekend, above and beyond the rail adventure, that we get to enjoy. We’re here to see Angela and Jack! It’s our first time to visit them in their new house, which is absolutely beautiful. Their baby is coming in July, and Jack’s wonderful mother and sister have planned a baby shower this afternoon for Angela. Even though our daughter lives a half-continent away from us, I take great comfort in knowing that she is surrounded by such a loving and caring family as the Aprahamians. Dinner last night with their entire family (Armenian food!) was wonderful, and today will be special as well. Alycia and baby Nolan are also here, having flown in yesterday afternoon, and it was such a joy seeing Angela holding her new nephew!
