Chasing the Sunset

We’re somewhere east of Tucson, Arizona as I write this, chasing the sunset. I don’t think we’re going to catch it!

There’s just a small trace of illumination on the craggy hills and jagged ravines that are passing outside my window. In the light that remains, my eyes make out the definite, lonely outline of rocky cliffs. My imagination, however, sees the silhouettes of howling coyotes against the sky. I imagine a lone, war-bonneted Indian watching our train as we sliver by him through the near darkness. Off in the distance, I can see the red taillights of hundreds of cars and 18-wheelers as they flow like blood down Interstate 10.
